‘Zero Dark Thirty’ tops weekend box office

Zero Dark Thirty, Kathryn Bigelow’s controversial film detailing the hunt for Osama bin Laden, topped the weekend box office, bringing in an estimated US$24 million.

The movie follows CIA agent Maya as she tracks the al-Qaida leader following the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, and ends with bin Laden’s death at the hands of Navy SEAL team in 2011.

A Haunted House, a spoof movie that plays on the found footage trend seen in Paranormal, took in $18.8 million, according to movie-tracking website boxofficemojo.com.

In the low-budget movie, a newlywed couple moves in to their dream home, only to find someone else is already there.

Gangster Squad, starring Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, was in third place at the weekend box office, taking in $16.7 million.

Oscar nominees Django Unchained ($11 million) and Les Miserables ($10 million) rounded out the top five.
